A simple kind of joy

I lift her up and hold her close.

She is whole, complete and complex

new

building herself piece by piece, taste and touch

every cuddle, every kiss

every curious look and every tear wiped away.

I lift her up and hold her close

She nibbles my shoulder, resting

a tiny hand on my chin

She smells of soap and milk

skin warm, soft and smooth

like velvet ribbon on my fingertips.

She looks at me, as if to memorize

and I, unable to resist

pepper her with kisses

until her whole body smiles

mouth, eyes, and a happy little wiggle.
