Mulatta

She is beautiful.
Dark curls cloud and halo
around her innocent face.
Midnight and ink eyes,
her story newly begun.
She is beautiful.

My family loves her.
Traces of me mark her, especially in her smile
Good hair, they said and I had to agree
She is black.
But she is
not.

Mulatto princess
Sweet, scented maple and brown sugar oatmeal
and milk. She wears 1000 kisses.
Blanketed in 1000 hugs to keep her warm.

Her daddy’s family loves her.
Some grateful she looks more like him than me.
Because “black babies are ugly… no offense.”
She is beautiful.
She is puerto-rican.
But she is
not.
